I have left New York for Miami Beach, next stop the world! With a passion for new people, new places, food and everything in between I want to document my new life as an explorer both in my backyard and abroad. While rating them with my sarcastic humor and quick wit, I hope you will come along and enjoy this journey with me…

A Tipsy Travel Through Time

Club vs. bar? The age old question that people ask to determine the type of person they are conversing with. If you say “club” you may be perceived as young (pretending to be young) even sceney or high maintenance answer “bar” and you’re chill, laid back, down to earth, “real”. What it all comes down to is that these two very broad categories no longer encompass the wide variety of establishments in the past few years there have been an abundance of speak easys, mixology meccas, high-end sports bars with sparklers, jazz clubs and themed lounges popping up all over the world that now force us to break that question down even further. Are you into hipster-trendy bourbon bars with a touch of tight pants or do you prefer bottle service for $1,500+?? The beauty of it all is that there really is something for everyone.

In my recent travels and at-home shenanigans I’ve stumbled upon two hidden gems that felt more like a travel through time rather then a typical vodka night on the town. One not so new, Gregory’s Jazz  Club in Rome, known to the locals and kept secret from miserable tourists. I was lucky enough to find a local willing to show me an unforgettable taste of Roman night life. The other, Gale Hotel’s Rec Room. A retro throwback reminiscent of my grandparent’s basement (in the best possible way), hidden only because the masterful Menin Hotel moguls wanted it that way. Well done!

Gregory’s Jazz  Club

On a rainy night in Rome…sounds like the beginning of a movie screen play right? Well anyway it was Rome and it was rainy and it was every bit as magical as the movies. My tour guide (who shall remain nameless) introduced me to Gregory’s Jazz  Club. From the outside it looks like any city bar, but walk up the narrow steps and tucked up in a small loft lives an acoustic musical playground. Gorgeous waitresses climbing through the small, but full crowd deliver dark red wine and crepes while the Emanuele Urso Swing Band (click link for YouTube clip) entertains a crowd full of clap happy, foot stomping fans. Emanuele along with his brother on the piano and father on the bass are just one of many musical acts that have come through Gregory’s, but for me the best! From the music, to the food, to the wine…it was an experience I will never forget and one of the many reasons why I fell in love with Rome.

Rec Room

The homage to a 70s style basement (swingers not included), may be my new favorite spot in South Beach. With an impressive vinyl collection and even more impressive DJ mixology, tunes from The Supremes and Jackson 5 are mixed with beats that only Miami knows best. They even included a life sized replica of the famous leg lamp (seen below) featured in the Christmas classic, A Christmas Story. The feel is comfortable, the drinks are timely (thanks to some very efficient bar tending) and look is nostalgic. If you need a cure for your Saturday Night Fever, I suggest you boogie on down to Rec Room before the rest of the world finds out what Gale is hiding.

A Slice of New York - Primo Pizza Miami

It’s hard to please New Yorkers when it comes to pizza. Even in New York there is the ongoing debate as to who has the best slice. In South Beach that debate is limited due to the lack of options and there’s the general consensus that there is, in fact, no good pizza outside of the five boroughs. Some may argue that Pizza Rustica is decent after a few cocktails at your favorite Miami hot spot, but the reality is that there is no New York pizza in Miami. Once we accept that fact we can move forward to embrace the closest thing…Primo Pizza!

The only place I will order from and can even bring myself to call a slice is Primo Pizza located at 100 Collins Avenue in Miami Beach. The pizza is huge and the “slices” are too big to even fold. Any real NY foodie knows that our lack of patience is what led to the invention of the pizza fold in the first place. God forbid we stop and breath while we eat, we can barely chew with our mouths closed (kidding). But it’s the perfect size to get a satisfying meal in while on the go. If you can’t fold it, it’s not a NY slice…end of story!

The best thing at Primo’s is their Chicken Parm Roll. This brings me to another Miami phenomenon, you can’t find a decent chicken cutlet in the entire city, so right there we have a winner. This delightful piece of heaven consists of chicken cutlet, parmesan, sauce and mozzarella all tucked perfectly in a doughy crust and brushed with garlic. If and when I move back to the great state of New York this would absolutely be something I would miss in Miami.

It may not be like home, but it’s pretty damn close…Enjoy!

Dive in Movie at The Standard, Miami

No, it’s not a typo. I meant DIVE in movie. This weekend, I had my first experience at The Standard, Miami’s pool past sunset. My love for pool parties is no secret, but this weekend the party changed as we took the festivities from day to night. We traded the Chevy Malibu and roller skates for pool loungers, inflatable sharks and vodka…the heated towels were a nice touch too!

With JAWS on the “big screen” and perfect weather, we couldn’t ask for anything more! Seriously, tell me a better way to close out the weekend than with good friends (star worthy appearance by Mr. O’Donnell), a good movie (horror classic) and good cocktails?! The only downside…these cinematic pool fiestas are few and far between as The Standard crew only hosts movie night once a month, but you better believe I’ll be making an appearance next month for the 9PM showing of Blue Lagoon!!

Taste of New York In Miami at Roasters’ n Toasters

Who doesn’t love to be reminded of home? And what better than a little nosh at a New York-style Jewish deli right here in Miami Beach? Some may not consider this little piece of heaven “Jewish-style”, but with a menu inclusive of Matzo ball soup and pastrami sandwiches…you do the math. My friend Chris was nice enough to “drag me” to Roasters’ n Toasters for brunch and the line out the door proved to be well worth the wait. The quick service and close tables felt like dining with family…it was loud, chaotic and perfect!

MY MENU

  • Matzo Ball Soup (one ball!!)
  • Pastrami and Corned Beef on Rye (with a side of cole slaw and a kosher pickle)
  • National Deli Mustard (it deserves its own bullet)
  • Dr. Brown’s Cream Soda

The perfect cure for any Miami hangover and so authentic it’s better than Bubbe’s!! (Just don’t tell her I said so)

Out with the Old Gansevoort, In with the New Perry

What happens when you take a beloved hotel and current SoBe staple and replace it with The Perry?? Pretty much nothing…the once famous Gansevoort South Beach has been sold and with the exception of some upcoming (and much needed) renovations, has transitioned seamlessly into The Perry.

Miami Beach is known for adapting quickly to change…from clubs to restaurants and every hotel up and down Ocean Drive, there seems to be less and less familiarity down here in the 305. Don’t worry some favorites still remain, but coming back to Miami year after year works because it’s never exactly the same as you left it…

Philippe is Back!

Click here for my review on Examiner.com!!

Back and better than ever!! When Philippe by Philippe Chow first closed the doors to their location in the Gansevoort South, I thought we had lost a staple to the South Beach restaurant scene. This trendy take on Chinese cuisine had me from the moment I stepped into the deco-glamorous black, white and red refuge.

Lucky for me (and for you) they’re back with a new location, new attitude and the same mouth watering menu. A bold, but true statement, Philippe is home to the BEST Peking duck I have ever had! And if that wasn’t enough…they deliver!!

MY MENU

Wine:

  • Malbec, LAYER CAKE - Vintage 2010, Mendoza ~ Argentina

Starters:

  • Shrimp Spring Rolls - served with clear duck sauce for dipping
  • Chicken Lettuce Wraps - chopped chicken and vegetables sauteed and served with lettuce cups and plum sauce
  • Pork Soup Dumplings - AMAZING!! steamed to perfection with Mr. Chow’s special broth and served with a soy dipping sauce

Main Course:

  • Peking Duck - carved tableside and served with homemade pancakes, plum sauce, scallions and cucumbers

PROS - The food is just amazing. Using the adjective “delicious” doesn’t do the high-end Chinese restaurant justice and can only truly be appreciated by going in and trying it yourself. Needless to say, I will be adding Philippe to my speed-dial immediately (especially now that they deliver).

SERVICE!! My favorite server (you may remember him from my review of A Fish called AVALON), John, has made a move to Philippe and I couldn’t be happier. He is the embodiment of what service should be (and is) at Philippe. His suggestions are always spot on and his attentiveness is diligent without being intrusive.

The bar…positioned smack in the middle of the two dining rooms, is a U-shaped watering hole perfect for people watching both before and after the meal.

Oh and last but not least…the red Chuck Taylors!! What do Converse sneakers have to do with Chinese food? Everything if you’re a busser at Philippe. A smart little touch that tied in the restaurant’s decor and made my night.

CONS - Music…repeatedly pointed out by my friend and guest for the evening, the playlist needs some work. This might not seem like a huge deal, but in Miami Beach music is almost as important as the food itself. It was so bad that we quickly left after the meal to avoid having to listen any longer.

Philippe has some impressive neighbors at their new home South of Fifth (the former Taverna Opa), located across the street from Nikki Beach and a quick block away from Prime 112, there is no doubt they will fit in perfectly…once they change that playlist. Do yourselves a favor and make a reservation at the new Philippe by Philippe Chow immediately…you’ll thank me later!

A Fish called AVALON…Phenomenal!!

It is very rare that I don’t have any red meat when I go out to dinner. I am a carnivore (thanks to the guidance of my parents) and I thoroughly enjoy eating directly from the bone, sorry if that is too graphic but it’s true. So imagine my surprise when I was completely satisfied with my meat free meal this past Friday night.

A Fish called AVALON, was in a word…phenomenal. Everything from the food, to the service, to the live show (Ocean Drive people watching) was perfect. My friend Sara and I needed to relax after a stressful work week and decided some wine and an ocean view would do the trick. She suggested seafood and after hearing amazing things, the choice was clear. A Fish called AVALON, has survived twenty-two years at the legendary Avalon Hotel (a lifetime by Miami’s standards) and from the first bite we could see why.

Bang Bang Shrimp

Jumbo Lump Crab and Rock Shrimp Cakes

Miso-Glazed Seabass

Macadamia-Crusted Snapper

Key Lime Pie

MY MENU

Wine:

  • Pinot Gris, Lange, Oregon

Starters:

  • Bang Bang Shrimp - Jumbo Shrimp served on top of a Mint-Yogurt Sauce with Cucumber-Pepper Relish
  • Jumbo-Lump Crab and Rock Shrimp Cakes with Granny Smith Apple and Carrot-Celery Root Slaw served on top of a Spicy Rémoulade

Main Course:

  • Miso-Glazed Seabass served on top of a Celery-Root Mashed Potatoes, Mango-Mint Beurre Blanc, Roasted Mussles and Baby Bok Choy
  • Macadamia Crusted Red Snapper with Spinach Risotto and Raspberry Beurre Blanc

Dessert:

  • Key Lime Pie with Whipped Cream on top of a Raspberry Drizzle and garnished with Fresh Raspberries

The wine was clean, crisp and had a bubbly finish (nice little surprise). The appetizers were both delicious! The Bang Bang Shrimp were cooked perfectly and the mint-yogurt sauce did not overwhelm, but enhanced the flavor of the shrimp. After tasting the Jumbo-Lump Crab and Rock Shrimp Cakes, I was surprised I had never tasted the combination before. I know there are many variations of crab cakes, different sauces and spices, but the marriage of crab and shrimp was very smart. We took a break in between courses to people watch and if you haven’t been to Miami Beach before, the people watching does not get any better. Our server, John, helped with the selection of our main courses and he could not have picked a better selection. The Seabass was cooked perfectly with just the right amount of Miso-Glaze. The Celery-Root Mashed Potatoes hit the spot and the only flaw was the Roasted Mussels. They were a little fishy, completely unnecessary and they did nothing but take up room on my plate. Sara’s Macadamia Crusted Red Snapper was flakey and fresh and although I wasn’t sure about the Raspberry Beurre Blanc, it was a match made in seafood heaven! The combination of the tangy sauce with the subtle flavors the fish made the dish come to life.

Did you think these two girls were done? Oh no! We had to end the meal with dessert, because I strongly believe a meal is not complete without something sweet (apologies for the rhyming). The Key Lime Pie was just what the sweet tooth doctor ordered. Tangy and sweet, we wouldn’t have ended the meal any other way.
