Today Hindus everywhere celebrated Holi, an annual festival of colors held at the end of winter. In temples, the faithful prayed as colored powder and jets of colored water were sprayed upon them. Thousands of white-clothed revelers in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nepal took to the streets to throw bright powders and perfumes at each other, and many captured the celebrations on Instagram.

My beloved Yardbird lives approximately 100 feet from my apartment in South Beach and now Swine Southern Table & Bar is moving in across the street from my Coral Gables office. I’m starting to think the people at 50 Eggs Inc. are following me and I’m not complaining!

This Saturday, Swine will open their doors in the heart of Coral Gables and introduce their innovative and mind blowing culinary style to their already infamous Southern cuisine, this time with a menu focused on the noble hog.

Serving up creative takes on classic Southern favorites, the menu at Swine features heritage breed pigs and local farm-sourced produce as well as regional fish and fowl. Menu items include Bourbon Molasses Cured Pork Jowls, Smoked Berkshire Spare Ribs with a Carolina Mop, a Black Bean Spice Rubbed Ossabaw Chop with Mofongo Butter, Sorghum and Cider Brined Guinea Hen with Crispy Black-Eyed Peas as well as dishes featuring Local Suckling Pig, Russian Wild Boar, Texas Antelope and Mississippi Quail. All are paired with an ever-changing litany of seasonally inspired side dishes and traditional Southern desserts.

A Tipsy Travel Through Time

Club vs. bar? The age old question that people ask to determine the type of person they are conversing with. If you say “club” you may be perceived as young (pretending to be young) even sceney or high maintenance answer “bar” and you’re chill, laid back, down to earth, “real”. What it all comes down to is that these two very broad categories no longer encompass the wide variety of establishments in the past few years there have been an abundance of speak easys, mixology meccas, high-end sports bars with sparklers, jazz clubs and themed lounges popping up all over the world that now force us to break that question down even further. Are you into hipster-trendy bourbon bars with a touch of tight pants or do you prefer bottle service for $1,500+?? The beauty of it all is that there really is something for everyone.

In my recent travels and at-home shenanigans I’ve stumbled upon two hidden gems that felt more like a travel through time rather then a typical vodka night on the town. One not so new, Gregory’s Jazz Club in Rome, known to the locals and kept secret from miserable tourists. I was lucky enough to find a local willing to show me an unforgettable taste of Roman night life. The other, Gale Hotel’s Rec Room. A retro throwback reminiscent of my grandparent’s basement (in the best possible way), hidden only because the masterful Menin Hotel moguls wanted it that way. Well done!

Gregory’s Jazz Club

On a rainy night in Rome…sounds like the beginning of a movie screen play right? Well anyway it was Rome and it was rainy and it was every bit as magical as the movies. My tour guide (who shall remain nameless) introduced me to Gregory’s Jazz Club. From the outside it looks like any city bar, but walk up the narrow steps and tucked up in a small loft lives an acoustic musical playground. Gorgeous waitresses climbing through the small, but full crowd deliver dark red wine and crepes while the Emanuele Urso Swing Band (click link for YouTube clip) entertains a crowd full of clap happy, foot stomping fans. Emanuele along with his brother on the piano and father on the bass are just one of many musical acts that have come through Gregory’s, but for me the best! From the music, to the food, to the wine…it was an experience I will never forget and one of the many reasons why I fell in love with Rome.

Rec Room

The homage to a 70s style basement (swingers not included), may be my new favorite spot in South Beach. With an impressive vinyl collection and even more impressive DJ mixology, tunes from The Supremes and Jackson 5 are mixed with beats that only Miami knows best. They even included a life sized replica of the famous leg lamp (seen below) featured in the Christmas classic, A Christmas Story. The feel is comfortable, the drinks are timely (thanks to some very efficient bar tending) and look is nostalgic. If you need a cure for your Saturday Night Fever, I suggest you boogie on down to Rec Room before the rest of the world finds out what Gale is hiding.

Asia de Cuba and Bianca Take On Christmas in Miami

Two of Sobe’s household favorites are changing traditions and adding their individual (and tremendously chic) touches to this year’s Christmas menus. Local Miamians and visitors alike can take the stress and spatulas out of their holiday planning and let Asia de Cuba at Mondrian South Beach and/or Bianca at Delano South Beach handle the rest.

Guests looking for a little Miami in their holiday menu can head to Asia de Cuba. The restaurant’s Asian and Latin influence are incorporated in two prix-fix menus featuring their perfected fusion fare. Christmas Eve’s menu will include Salt Cod Croquette salad of tomato, avocado, onion, Seville orange, soy vinaigrette and Mojo Marinated Shoulder of Pork Caja China moros y christianos, roast plantain mashed potatoes, napa cabbage with chicharrones, shisho and thai basil chimichurri.

On Christmas Day, guests can savor the flavors of the prix-fixe menu’s delectable dishes which include an appetizer, entrée and dessert. Menu items are as follows: Stone Crabs mung bean aioli, honey mustard sauce, mizuna, charred lemon vinaigrette; Coffee Crusted Slow Roasted Prime Rib of Beef yucca galette, chicarrones, mushrooms, shanghai bok choy, toasted coconut, horseradish au jus; and for a sweet treat, Arroz Con Leche spiced rum soaked sundried cherries, cinnamon churros. Prix-fixe menu is available at $52 per person.

Bianca at South Beach’s glamorous Delano offers a modern take on Italian cuisine with homemade pastas and fresh seasonal ingredients. The sauces are a little lighter than mom used to make, but the food never fails to impress. Guests will have a little something extra to be joyful about this holiday season with an a la carte selection of specials in addition to the regular menu. To celebrate Christmas Eve and Christmas, Bianca will offer an Italian-inspired selection of festive additions including Delicata Squash Salad ricotta salata, candied walnuts, walnut vinaigrette; Gnocchi di Zucca ricotta, brown butter, sage; Sous Vide Colorado Lamb Chops sautéed baby artichokes, sunchoke purée. Pistachio gremolata, lamb jus and a decadent Christmas Candy Cocktail Godiva white chocolate, nutmeg, mint.

London’s Millennium Bridge

The London Millennium Footbridge is a steel suspension pedestrian bridge stretching across the River Thames. It connects the Globe Theatre and Tate Modern on one side, and faces St. Paul’s Cathedral on the other, framing the iconic dome perfectly and making the bridge one of the most photogenic places in London. Construction of the bridge began in 1998, and it officially opened in June, 2000.

It seems like just yesterday Ho’ Brah opened their doors and invited Brookynites and New Yorkers alike to a taste of the west coast with their surf taco inspired fare (and more importantly for us tipsy travelers) the cocktails! From tequila to bulldogs, margarita masterpieces and of course ketel these boys have struck surfer gold bringing endless summer to Bay Ridge. Fast forward to November 30, 2012 and I’m thrilled to wish Ho’ Brah a very happy 1st birthday. It’s amazing what a year can do and I can’t imagine my old neighborhood without was has quickly become a Bay Ridge staple. Head over to the gem of 3rd Avenue RIGHT NOW for a night filled with celebratory cocktails and some of the best people I know!
